General Dual Enrollment Paperwork and Policies
Dual Enrollment at Mott High School
Students in the Waterford School District may qualify for enrollment in undergraduate courses in college level accredited institutions even as they are completing required and elective coursework leading to a Waterford Mott High School diploma. Students are allowed to take up to 10 dual enrollment classes in grades 9-12. This opportunity falls within Michigan’s Public Act 160, the Postsecondary Enrollment Options Act.
1) Who is eligible to Dual Enroll?
a. Students who are in grades 9 – 12.
b. Students who have earned a qualifying score on the ACT, PLAN, PSAT, SAT, or Michigan Merit Exam in the subject that is consistent with the content area of the college class.
i. See the minimum qualifying scores in the Waterford Mott High School Required Dual Enrollment Paperwork link below.
ii. The MME, ACT, SAT, and Compass scores are designed to be indicative of whether or not a pupil is ready to take post-secondary courses and
succeed without remediation. The EXPLORE, PLAN and PSAT scores are designed to indicate whether a pupil is on track to be ready to take post-
secondary courses and succeed without remediation.
c. Students who are enrolled in at least one course at Waterford Mott Park High School.
2) What type of class can I take?
a. Any course that is academically or career oriented.
b. Any course that is not already taught at either Mott High School or Kettering High School.
c. Any course that is offered by the school district but, in taking, would create a scheduling conflict.
d. AP courses have precedence over entry-level postsecondary courses with similar content.
e. Excluded courses include the following: divinity/theology/religious education, hobby/craft, and recreation/physical education.
3) Where can I take dual enrollment courses?
a. At any local college or university in which you have applied and have been accepted.
b. Most commonly attended schools for Waterford students are: OCC and WSU.
i. OCC Dual Enrollment
ii. WSU Dual Enrollment
4) What will my schedule at Mott look like?
a. You will need to be enrolled in a minimum of one Mott class per semester.
i. Each college course will take the place of 1 of your HS classes. Dual enrollment classes must be scheduled outside of the student's regular school
hours.
5) What is the cost associated with dual enrollment?
a. There is a set amount that Waterford School District will pay for each college class.
i. The student is responsible for anything over and above that amount in addition to books and providing his/her own transportation.
6) Will I earn both college and high school credit?
a. You can choose to earn credit at WMHS and your grade will factor into your high school GPA. If you choose not to count your college courses toward high school credit, your grade and credit will not be included in your GPA or total credits.
b. Dual Enrollment courses are automatically counted into your high school GPA unless stated in writing otherwise.
c. You will earn college credit with the college in which you dual enroll; however, it will be up to your final college choice (after high school graduation) as to whether they will accept the credit as college credit.
7) When do I sign up?
a. If you are interested in fall dual enrollment, it is best to see your counselor in early May of the preceding year.
b. If you are interested in spring dual enrollment, it is best see your counselor in early October in the current school year.
c. Keep an eye on college admissions & registration deadlines as they vary.
8) How do I apply?
a. Apply online to the college of your choice. It is your responsibility to know the registration deadlines for the college.
b. Print off the Waterford Mott High School Required Dual Enrollment Paperwork from the link below and bring to your School Counselor.
i. Follow your School Counselor’s directions explicitly.
c. After admittance to the college and meeting with your School Counselor, meet with a College Admissions Counselor about eligible and appropriate classes.
i. You are responsible for making sure the college has all paperwork required.
d. Register for classes. Keep in mind you must give yourself enough time for travel.
e. Bring your counselor a copy of your college schedule. Reimbursement for your college class/classes will not take place without a copy of your college schedule.
